Cambell Park Steam Show

The steam fair is held every year by the Bletchley rotary club to raise money for their charity work. As has been the case at previous events the main features of the show where the steam trains, classic cars and the fun fair. The Barrels had a stand again this year so we could show a variety of bikes to the public. We had a wonderful location - right between the funfair and the toilets which meant we were all prepared for 2 rather noisy smelly days. Despite our location the weather was lovely and the surrounding stalls not as annoying as we had expected. The Saturday was rather quiet with not that many visitors to the show and a small but varied collection of club bikes. Keith's trike, Moles combo, Dougie's green scooter thing, my Honda, Colin's Enfield, Yogi's Harley and Mona's Bandit provided a nice variety of machines. Then club members who came along spend most of the day relaxing in the shade, speaking to people interested in the bikes and the club and handing out leaflets.

The Sunday was a lot busier at the event and our stand had far more bikes and trikes. Dougie brought a collection of classic bikes and scooters including his Ariel 3 drag bike which he was demonstrating by riding it around the site before the public arrived to the amusement of those around. After these Chucky decided to have a go on Dougie's folding scooter to see if (as he suspected) it was faster than his rat which had broken down again before coming to the Saturday show.

After a rather wobbly lap of the site Chucky decided to stick to his C90 saying that the scooter was so slow he was getting bug splats on the back of his helmet. Just before the event opened to the public Tim arrived on his trike which looked great as always and then made all of us with hangovers feel very ill by starting the day with a giant egg and bacon bap and a pint of lager for breakfast. Again, we had a lovely array of different ages, styles, colours and shapes among the club bikes. The riders themselves again spent most of the day trying to keep cool, speaking to the public and investigating the stalls. We gave out a lot of leaflets for the custom and classic show and even had some people who were interested in the club itself. The highlights of the show were the classic cars (I really fell for the Cobra - the £8k price tag scared me off though!) and the excellent bike stunt show the best part of which was the guy riding through the flaming wall. And of course James was on the cubs float on the parade! All in all it was a good day and the rotary club raised lots of money for charity.
